Dental implant is also known as endosseous implant or fixture is a dental procedure that anchors (small screw) to the jawbone to support a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge or denture. The small screw acts as a replacement tooth root. Dental implants are often used to retain artificial teeth, facial prosthetics or to act as anchor points for orthodontics. This procedure is a great way to correct a missing tooth. It can be for cosmetic reasons or because it affects your speech or chewing. When you have a missing tooth it can also create bone loss around the area of the missing tooth. If you lose your tooth by accident or disease there is a way to restore your smile. Dental implants are choice preferred by many people to eliminate the hassle of dentures, partial dentures and sometimes a choice for people that do not want to have to remove partial structure for a bridge. You can either have a single implant or several implants and also have implants put in to support a full set of dentures.

A natural tooth has two parts the crown, which is the visible part that is covered with white enamel and the root is the second part. The root supports the crown and extends to the jawbone. Dental implant is a procedure using prosthetic replacement for a missing tooth. The implant is a post made of titanium that is attached to the jawbone as an anchor for a replacement tooth. Titanium has the unique property of fusing directly to the jawbone. This biological process is called osseointegration and creates firm support for the new man-made teeth without causing a foreign body reaction.

There are different forms of implants widely used in dentistry. A single implant is a stand-alone treatment for an individual tooth. You do not have to treat the tooth next to it. A fixed implant that supports a bridge is a multiple tooth dental prosthesis. The bridge will usually connect to more than one implant and may also connect to teeth as anchor points. A removable implant is what supports dentures. This is a type of dental prosthetic that is not permanently fixed. You can remove the dentures by disconnecting it from the implant abutments.

The support and firm structure of dental implants create a comfortable more natural feeling. Dental implants are a good value because they can last a lifetime with good care.

Dental implants may be right for you if you:

  • Have one or more missing teeth
  • Have a jawbone that’s reached full growth
  • Have adequate bone to secure the implants or are able to have a bone graft
  • Have healthy oral tissues
  • Don’t have health conditions that will affect bone healing
  • Are unable or unwilling to wear dentures
  • Want to improve your speech
  • Are willing to commit several months to the process
  • Don’t smoke tobacco

Dental Implant Risks:

Like any surgery, dental implant surgery poses some health risks. Problems are rare, though, and when they do occur they’re usually minor and easily treated. Risks include:

  • Infection at the implant site.
  • Injury or damage to surrounding structures, such as other teeth or blood vessels Nerves damage, which can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your natural teeth, gums, lips or chin.
  • Sinus problems, when dental implants placed in the upper jaw protrude into one of your sinus cavities.

dental implant procedure pain:

Dental implant surgery is usually an outpatient surgery performed in stages, with healing time between procedures. The process of placing a dental implant involves multiple steps, including:

  • Damaged tooth removal
  • Jawbone preparation (grafting), when needed
  • Dental implant placement
  • Bone growth and healing
  • Abutment placement
  • Artificial tooth placement

The entire process can take many months from start to finish. Much of that time is devoted to healing and waiting for the growth of new bone in your jaw. Depending on your situation, the specific procedure done or the materials used, certain steps can sometimes be combined.

dental implant bone graft:

If your jawbone isn’t thick enough or is too soft, you may need bone grafting before you can have dental implant surgery. That’s because the powerful chewing action of your mouth exerts great pressure on your bone, and if it can’t support the implant, the surgery likely would fail. A bone graft can create a more solid base for the implant.

There are several bone graft materials that can be used to rebuild a jawbone. Options may include a natural bone graft, such as from another location in your body, or a synthetic bone graft, such as bone-substitute material that can provide support structures for new bone growth. Talk to your doctor about options that will work best for you.

It may take several months for the transplanted bone to grow enough new bone to support a dental implant. In some cases, you may need only minor bone grafting, which can be done at the same time as the implant surgery. The condition of your jawbone determines how you proceed.

Once the metal implant post is placed in your jawbone, osseointegration begins. During this process, the jawbone grows into and unites with the surface of the dental implant. This process, which can take several months, helps provide a solid base for your new artificial tooth — just as roots do for your natural teeth.

Placing the dental implant

During surgery to place the dental implant, your oral surgeon makes a cut to open your gum and expose the bone. Holes are drilled into the bone where the dental implant metal post will be placed. Since the post will serve as the tooth root, it’s implanted deep into the bone.

At this point, you’ll still have a gap where your tooth is missing. A type of partial, temporary denture can be placed for appearance if needed. You can remove this denture for cleaning and while you sleep.

Types of implants and techniques

dental implants

Dental implants come in different sizes, heights and types. Your dental implant expert can help you determine which option is best for you, depending on your particular needs.

Types of implants

There are two main types of implants:

  • Endosteal: These dental implants are placed in the jawbone. Typically made of titanium and shaped like small screws, they are the most commonly used type of implant.
  • Subperiosteal: These dental implants are placed under the gum but on, or above, the jawbone. This type of implant may be used in patients who do not have enough healthy natural jawbone and cannot, or do not want to, undergo a bone augmentation procedure to rebuild it.

If your jawbone is not able to support dental implants, several techniques can be used to rebuild bone, restore your natural jawline and provide a sturdy foundation for implant-supported teeth. These include:

  • Bone augmentation. This involves restoring or regenerating bone in your jaw when it is not able to support implants otherwise. Research shows that using bone additives and growth factors to fortify the bone generally achieves the best results.
  • Sinus lift. Also called sinus augmentation or sinus elevation, this involves adding bone below the sinus in cases where natural bone has deteriorated due to missing upper back teeth.
  • Ridge expansion. If your jaw isn’t wide enough to support dental implants, bone graft material can be added to a small ridge, or space, created along the top of your jaw.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a permanent tooth replacement solution that is placed in the jaw through surgery. Each implant consists of three parts:

  1. A post – the base of dental implants
  2. An abutment – the connecting piece
  3. A crown or prosthesis – the permanent, new tooth

The post, also sometimes called a screw, is inserted into the bone beneath your gums to replace the root of your tooth. Posts are made of medical-grade titanium, a material that bonds naturally with your bone to create a secure hold for your replacement teeth. The abutment is a connector piece that attaches your implant post to your new replacement tooth, also known as the crown. Your crowns are custom-made by your dentist to look just like natural teeth. If you are replacing multiple teeth, you may receive a bridge or other multi-tooth prosthesis instead of a single-tooth crown.

Dental implants are permanent anchors that integrate with the jawbone to provide a stable base for long-term tooth replacement. Customized crowns (the teeth) are then attached to the implants.

Because dental implants become part of the jaw, they look and feel like natural teeth. They don’t move or slip around while you eat or talk.

In implant dentistry, a dental implant consists of a small, screw-shaped, titanium post that replaces the root of a missing tooth. It is covered by a porcelain crown that looks and feels just like your old tooth. It requires a minor surgical procedure in which the post is inserted into the jawbone where the missing tooth once was and is left to heal for a set period of time. While it heals, the bone fuses to the implant, and then the tooth-like crown is attached.

Dental Implants

Why Dental Implants?

Implant dentistry is quickly gaining popularity. Dental implants have a 95 percent tooth-replacement success rate and correct even the most severe problems associated with missing teeth. They are a safe and effective method for replacing missing teeth with new, natural-looking, permanent teeth, and they help preserve the tooth-supporting bone that naturally deteriorates when a tooth is lost, thereby sustaining the integrity of your facial structure.

For many, dental implants offer a much-needed reprieve from ill-fitting, uncomfortable dentures or retainers with false teeth. At East Wind Dental Care, we offer three primary tooth-replacement options. Depending on the number of missing teeth, certain implant options work better than others.

Below are just a few of the benefits of replacing teeth with dental implants:

  • Beautiful new teeth. They look just like healthy natural teeth. Patients are very happy with the appearance of their smiles after implant procedures.
  • A healthy option. Bone loss, dental shifting, and other issues can arise when teeth are missing for an extended length of time. Dental implants stimulate the bone beneath your gums, preventing bone loss. Your new replacement teeth will also prevent any dental shifting around the missing tooth site.
  • Lifelong tooth replacements. With proper care and regular oral hygiene, your implants can last a lifetime. The titanium implants form a permanent bond with the bone in your jaw, allowing your implants to function just like natural teeth.
  • No-slip security. After the healing period is complete, they are just as strong as healthy teeth. Implant patients can eat the foods they enjoy without worrying about their implants slipping or coming out of place.
  • Single-tooth replacements have the highest success rate, and because they will never decay or need root canal treatments, they are the best long-term investment for replacing a single tooth.
  • Multitooth replacements are similar to bridges and are commonly used when three or more teeth in a row are missing. A bridge must connect to a natural tooth, which often becomes weak and starts to decay. With tooth implants, the surrounding teeth are not affected.
  • Implant-supported dentures replace entire jawlines along the top or bottom (or both) rows. These dentures lock into place so they will not shift around in the mouth or fall out during jaw movement.

Just like your natural teeth, with proper maintenance and cleaning, dental implants can last forever. As part of his job as your dental implant specialist, Dr. Merat Ostovar ensures the longevity of your dental work by guiding you through the maintenance and care of your implants at each stage, both immediately after and long after the procedure.

Dental Implant Procedures

Dental implants are a versatile tool that can restore one tooth or many teeth. The implants can support a permanent single tooth crown, a multi-tooth bridge, or even a full permanent denture. Most of the time, surgery requires two separate procedures. Sometimes single-stage (immediate-loading) implants can be placed, reducing the number of visits necessary. Your surgeon will review your condition and treatment options with you during a consultation appointment before starting your treatment process.

During the initial surgery, your surgeon will place the implants into the bone/empty tooth sockets beneath the gums. This surgery is usually performed under IV anesthesia, so patients can rest comfortably until the procedure is over. After the surgery is over, your designated driver will be able to take you home to rest.

The next step takes place after the implant sites have healed. This second procedure involves attaching your permanent replacement teeth to your implants. Your dentist will customize your new crowns to fit your smile. Once the crowns are in place, the implant process is complete, and you can enjoy all the benefits of your new teeth.

The healing period after your initial surgery can vary, depending on the type of implants you receive. The implants must integrate with the bone in your jaw before they can undergo full chewing forces; therefore, a soft diet may be necessary for several weeks to a few months. There may be some discomfort and swelling in the days after the procedure, but most patients report that their pain is not severe. You will receive a prescription for pain medication to control discomfort, but some patients find that they do not need it. You may also be given antibiotics to prevent post-surgical infection. Your comfort and safety are our top priorities, and our surgeons will be happy to answer any questions you have.

If you have missing or damaged teeth, it can significantly impact your ability to eat, smile, and live a normal life. Replacing your teeth with dental implants is invaluable to your overall oral and mental health. The main reasons that implants are a wise investment are because

  • They can last a lifetime if cared for properly, avoiding the need for additional replacement procedures down the road.
  • They prevent your other teeth from shifting out of alignment, meaning you won’t have to worry about future corrective treatment.
  • They stimulate the jaw bone, prevent it from deteriorating, and help avoid serious bone loss and oral health problems.
  • They look, feel, and function just like natural teeth, which means you can eat without worrying about teeth slipping or falling out, and you can smile with confidence.

Are they right for me?

If you are healthy enough to undergo minor dental surgery, and you have enough bone in your jaw to support them, you may be a candidate for surgery. Even in cases of bone loss, your surgeon may be able to prepare your mouth using a bone grafting procedure. We can thoroughly examine your condition and health history, discuss your intended treatment plan (including anesthesia), go over your payment options, and determine an estimate of your costs. The best way to find out if they are right for you is to come to our office in Hillsboro for a consultation appointment.

A reason to smile again: all-on-four dental implants

all-on-four-implants

Can just four implants replace all of the teeth on the top or the bottom of your mouth? Thanks to advances in dental implant technology, that answer is a resounding yes.

Believe it or not, tooth loss is extremely common among adults, especially as we age. In fact, more than 35 million people in America are missing all of their upper and/or lower teeth. Rather than living with the discomfort and hassles of dentures, many people are opting for what is called “all-on-four” dental implant restoration.

Dental Implants in Hillsboro, OR

Our office is conveniently located near Walmart and Albertson on-off of Baseline Rd and Cornelius Pass RD. If you live in Hillsboro, OR and are looking for a permanent solution for tooth loss, contact our office. One of our staff members will be happy to discuss your options and schedule a consultation with one of our skilled oral surgeons.

All-on four: One full arch of teeth, four dental implants

To fully understand this remarkable technique for replacing teeth, you should first understand what a dental implant is. An implant is a small titanium screw that fits inside your jawbone and replaces the root-part of a missing tooth. Minor surgery is required to insert the implants. Once the implant is in place, a crown is attached to give you a highly realistic-looking and functional prosthetic tooth.

Here’s where it gets really interesting: You do not need a dental implant for each and every one of your missing teeth. All you need is four precisely placed implants on the top of your mouth, and four on the bottom, to restore your full smile. That’s the beauty of the all-on-four. And because the implant is made of titanium, it has the unique ability to fuse to living bone and function as part of it. So eventually, the dental implant becomes part of the jawbone and serves as a strong, long-lasting foundation for your new teeth.

Besides ensuring that your implants are permanently fixed in place, this bone fusion has another important benefit: it prevents future bone loss in the jaw. This helps to maintain a more youthful facial structure—and better oral health. But perhaps the biggest surprise about the all-on-four is how quickly it can transform your life.

Yes, you can get a radiant, new smile in just one day

By combining the precise technology of the all-on-four procedure with the expertise of our implant teams, East Wind Dental Care has developed a way to give most patients a new smile in one day.

Here’s why the all-inclusive approach at East Wind Dental Care works for people who are missing a majority of their teeth:

  • We’re able to place the all-on-four dental implants and the arches of your new teeth in your mouth while you are fully sedated
  • You leave our center with a natural looking, fully functioning set of teeth—all in one day

After your day at East Wind Dental Care, your new smile will look and feel great, but it’s only temporary. You see, it takes dental implants some time to heal and fuse to your jawbone. Once that happens, you’ll come back in and your team will replace your temporary teeth with a permanent, customized smile designed just for you.

How do you know if the all-on-four from East Wind Dental Care is the right option for you?

Every East Wind Dental Care Dental Implant Center offers a free consultation for first-time patients. At your consultation, you’ll receive a free 3D CT Scan. This scan will help determine if you need implants and assist your doctors in creating your treatment plan. It’s the best way to find out how dental implants can change your life.

Benefits of Full-Arch Restoration

Many patients who suffer from major tooth loss either don’t know about full-arch restoration or don’t realize why it’s beneficial over other tooth replacement options. Unlike traditional (removable) dentures and tooth-supported bridges, a full-arch restoration is permanent. Once your dentures have been attached to the implants, you won’t have to worry about replacing them after a few years of wear and tear. Some of the biggest benefits of a full-arch restoration include the following:

  • Your new teeth will look exactly like natural teeth. Your restorative dentist custom designs your new arch of teeth to your specifications to ensure that you can feel completely confident in your smile.
  • You will regain total oral function. Not only will your new teeth look natural, but they will also function naturally. With your permanent denture, you can eat all the foods you love without worrying about it slipping or falling out.
  • The denture does not require special care. In addition to functioning like natural teeth, your full-arch restoration system can also be treated like natural teeth. The only care required to keep these new teeth healthy is regular brushing and flossing.
  • Your jaw bone will remain healthy. When teeth are missing, your jaw bone loses the stimulation it needs to stay healthy, causing it to atrophy. Because full-arch restoration utilizes dental implants, which integrate with the jaw, you will not have to worry about your jaw bone deteriorating.

PERI-IMPLANTITIS:

Peri-implantitis is a fancy medical term that simply means a form of gum disease. While it is most often associated with dentures due to bacteria and food particles that often get trapped in the dentures themselves between the gum and prosthesis? it sometimes can occur with dental implants, especially with a lack of proper oral care.

Dental implants, even though they cannot decay, still require the same care as natural teeth to avoid gum disease. Infections like peri-implantitis can spread through the gums and get into the jawbone if not caught and treated early on with a better oral hygiene regimen, some antibiotics, and a deep cleaning? saving the implant.

However, if the infection has progressed the dentist will likely have to remove the implant, treat the infected area, and then replace the implant all over again.?

WHAT IF I HAVE A LOOSE CROWN?

The crown is the visible component of the implant that resembles the top of a natural tooth. It is screwed on tightly to the abutment. In fact, a loose crown while rare also is much more common than an actual implant failure. However, if it feels loose, you need to contact your dentist immediately to determine the underlying cause and make sure it?s just a loose crown, not a failing implant.

However, if it feels loose, you need to contact your dentist immediately to determine the underlying cause and make sure it?s just a loose crown, not a failing implant.

peri-implantitis causes?

Peri-implantitis can be influenced by three factors:

  1. Patient-related factors including systemic diseases (e.g, diabetes, osteoporosis) and prior dental history (periodontitis)
  2. Social factors such as inadequate oral hygiene, smoking, and drug abuse
  3. Parafunctional habits (bruxism and malocclusion).

What Are the Advantages of Dental Implants?

There are many advantages to dental implants, including:

  • Improved appearance. Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth. And because they are designed to fuse with bone, they become permanent.
  • Improved speech. With poor-fitting dentures, the teeth can slip within the mouth causing you to mumble or slur your words. Dental implants allow you to speak without the worry that teeth might slip.
  • Improved comfort. Because they become part of you, implants eliminate the discomfort of removable dentures.
  • Easier eating. Sliding dentures can make chewing difficult. Dental implants function like your own teeth, allowing you to eat your favorite foods with confidence and without pain.
  • Improved self-esteem. Dental implants can give you back your smile and help you feel better about yourself.
  • Improved oral health. Dental implants don’t require reducing other teeth, as a tooth-supported bridge does. Because nearby teeth are not altered to support the implant, more of your own teeth are left intact, improving long-term oral health. Individual implants also allow easier access between teeth, improving oral hygiene.
  • Durability. Implants are very durable and will last many years. With good care, many implants last a lifetime.
  • Convenience. Removable dentures are just that; removable. Dental implants eliminate the embarrassing inconvenience of removing dentures, as well as the need for messy adhesives to keep them in place.

Dental implant success rate?

Numerous factors can affect the success of a dental implant. These include:

1. Gum disease

Healthy gums are criteria for dental implant surgery, and you can’t have this procedure with active gum disease.

Gum disease is an infection that can damage the gums and jaw bone. An untreated infection could develop around the implant and lead to failure. See a dentist to treat gum disease before getting an implant.

2. Smoking

Smoking can also cause dental implant failure because it restricts blood flow to the gums, slowing the healing process. Multiple research studies show that smokers can have a dental implant failure rate up to 20 percent.

Being a smoker doesn’t mean that you’re ineligible for a dental implant. However, you may have a better outcome if you stop smoking one week prior to a dental implant and if you don’t smoke for at least two months after implant placement.

3. Insufficient jaw bone

A successful procedure is also dependent on sufficient bone to support the implant. Without enough healthy bone, the surgeon cannot surgically place the implant into your jaw.

Bone loss can happen with osteoporosis. This condition develops when bone density decreases. Bones become fragile and there’s the increased risk of fractures. Severe gum disease can also cause deterioration of bones in the mouth.

4. Medical conditions

Dental implant failure is a possibility if you’re diagnosed with an autoimmune disease or conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes, which causes the body to heal at a slower pace. Slow healing can prevent osseointegration, where the implant fuses or integrates with your jaw bone.

The use of certain medications can also lead to dental implant failure. So it’s important to discuss any medications (prescription and over-the-counter) that you’re currently taking with your oral surgeon.

In 2016, McGill University researchers found that heartburn medications may reduce new bone growth, thus affecting how an implant fuses with the jaw bone. Also in 2016, researchers at the University at Buffalo reported similar results among people taking antidepressant medication.

5. Poor dental maintenance

The ability to practice good oral hygiene after a dental implant also has an impact on the success rate. You’re not an appropriate candidate for a dental implant if you have limitations that affect your range of motion or interfere with the ability to thoroughly clean your teeth.
